What Remains When the World Goes Quiet

The second part of my interview with 15 Questions is now online. Once again, my thanks to Tobias Fischer.
At its center was silence.
In an anechoic chamber, the walls absorb every sound, and even your own voice does not come back. Everyone feels a little uneasy at first. But if you stay a while, your heartbeat and the flow of your blood rise out of the stillness. What disappears are the sounds of the world; what appears are your own. As long as we are alive, there is no absolute silence. That room teaches it through the body.
I have seen something similar in research. Before people say they feel calm, their heart rate has already changed. The mind always learns, a little late, what sound has already done to the body.
That is why I want to keep a line in how I work with sound. Sound designed for sleep or recovery is there to give an answer. Music as a work of art is there to leave a question. Both matter, but I keep them apart.
Tobias’s questions gave me a chance to put into words things I have been thinking about for a long time. I hope you will read both parts.
